Francisco Sobrino (b. 1932) was a Spanish modern artist and pioneer of Op and Kinetic art movements.

Native to Guadalajara, Spain, Sobrino moved to Paris, France early in his career, helping found the artist cooperative, Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (GRAV). The primary focus of Sobrino and the GRAV was creating visually bold and interactive art.

During his time in the group, Sobrino began exploring the optical effects of geometric patterns in his works. The artist continued to explore these themes after the group disbanded in 1968.

“Untitled I” is a superlative example of Sobrino’s interaction with such themes. The bold color of the geometric pattern enhances the optical effect of the dynamic composition. 

The artist’s works can be found in the permanent collections of the world's finest institutions around the world, including Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), Fondazione Penny Guggenheim (Venice), and the Tate Gallery (London).
