Rita Letendre (b.1928) is one of Canada’s leading female abstract painters...and one of Caviar20's favorite artists. 

Letendre first established her reputation through her association with Les Automatistes in Montreal (including Borduas, Riopelle amongst others) during the 1950's. 

However we would argue that Letendre really hits her stride once she embraces hard-edge abstraction.

This evolution in style has a lot to do with the artist meeting (and eventually marrying) the Romanian-Israeli sculptor in the early 1960's. 

Together they seem to mature simultaneously, each artist influencing the other, becoming one of Canada's most formidable art couples. 

While we have offered her iconic hard-edge prints in the past, we are excited to be presenting an example of one of her earliest prints from 1969. The influence of is undeniable. 

Letendre's compositions, made of chevrons or arrows, and bold palettes are instantly recognizable. We love their undeniable uplifting energy.

Nearly every major institution in Canada has examples of her work in their permanent collections including the National Gallery, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
